It’s been almost a year since I’ve done a “Beer of the Month” but you know what? It’s back, baby. Did I go a whole year without drinking some craft beers? Hell no. Honestly…laziness. But have no fear, Beer of the Month is back and this month it belongs to Dogfish Head’s Raison d’Extra. One of Dogfish Head’s “occasional rarities,” I was able to grab one the other day and definitely don’t regret it. Dogfish Head describes it as: “What 120 Minute IPA is to 60 Minute IPA, d’Extra is the d’Etre” and if you’ve ever had d’Etre, you know this beer is going to be great.
The beer is loaded with raisins and beet sugars and the those ingredients are very apparent from the first sip. ABV is between 15-18% so it’s a bit boozy but not nearly as boozy as you would imagine for such high alcohol content. The idea behind this beer was to be the ultimate beer partner for steak, hence it’s deep, dark red color (the beer version of red wine).
